Rita Reddy

Rita has over 20 years of progressive professional experience with United Nations, specializing in human rights, humanitarian law, governance and state building and gender mainstreaming. She has served with UNICEF, UN Office High Commission for Human Rights, UN High Commission for Refugees as well as on several UN peacekeeping missions. Highlights of her
achievements include providing leadership and vision for civil Affairs for post conflict environments, embracing conflict analysis, early warning and early response, mechanisms for information-sharing, crisis response and protection of civilians. In Sudan, she developed a program for promoting a culture of peace and reconciliation by identifying appropriate domestic
actors and/or processes and designing strategies to support State and local levels governments. Also, she helped to establish 49 Agriculture and Crop Protection Committees and 48 Peaceful Coexistence Committees among IDP communities in camps to resolve local conflicts. In terms of advancing international law, Rita participated in drafting teams for the Statute of Rome;
Convention on the Rights of the Child and its protocols, Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability, Convention on the Rights of Migrant Workers and their Family, Protocol to Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, Palermo Protocol, SAARC Convention on the Prevention of Trafficking of Women and Children for
Sexual Exploitation, Council of Europe Convention on Action Against Trafficking of Human Beings in 2005. In the Asia, she contributed to drafting legal instruments for: integrating and implementing CEDAW in the Asian and Pacific Region, for UNESCAP; combating Human Trafficking in Asia: a regional Guide to International Legal Instruments, Political Commitments
and Recommended Practices UNESCAP (2003).  In Malaysia, she led in the drafting of the Child Protection Act for Malaysia; Domestic Violence Act for Malaysia; and on the  Discrimination and the status of Women. She speaks English and French, and is proficient in Spanish.
